Glitter and Fluff and Girly Stuff

I remember fondly the days when I didn’t spend all of my waking moments worrying about cancer and chemo and medical bills and everything that has come into our lives in the last 3 months. I remember when I got to just talk about makeup and ‘fluff’, the girly stuff I so love. Nowadays, I feel guilty taking any time for myself if I’m being honest. I know, it’s just as important for me, the caregiver, the one supporting the warrior, to take time to recharge and reset, but it doesn’t come without a certain measure of guilt…I’m just sayin.

One thing I truly love is makeup. You may not get it, but some of you might…I’ll try to explain.

Makeup is pretty, it’s feminine, it’s glamorous, is flirty, sassy, sexy, fresh…or I should say, those are all things that I feel when I am able to take time to play with makeup. In my every day life, it’s anything but pretty, feminine, glamorous, flirty, sassy, sexy, or fresh. It’s tiresome, sweaty, dirty, stinky, nasty. I’m forever cleaning up messes made by my 4 year old tornado, or wiping a poopy butt, or cleaning something sticky off every surface of all the things in my house, I always have a stain on my shirt, doesn’t matter old or new, if I’m wearing it, it’s got a stain…because kids.

Makeup is an escape. I don’t think about all of the scary things happening around me, I sit at my vanity and tune everything else out except for the way my makeup smells, the texture of it, the way a makeup brush or sponge feels against my face, the beautiful colors in an eye shadow palette.

It doesn’t have to be expensive makeup, or luxury brands…I’m just as happy to get a drugstore, or affordable product to play with and test out. It’s transforming the way I see myself, knowing that I am still the same person with or without all the makeup and glitter, but feeling like a better version of myself, when I have my ‘face on’.

Makeup is something that is just for me. Only me. No one else gets to play with my makeup, it’s not something I have to share, like virtually everything else in my life…as a mom, that’s what we do right? It’s nice to have this one thing just for me, to help me get away for a little while and escape the reality that is my life currently.

ELF Skincare Review

Disclaimer: All products mentioned in this blog post were purchased by me, with my money, this is NOT a sponsored post. All opinions and thoughts are 100% based on my own personal experience.

Hello beauties! I wanted to talk a little about skincare today. The older I get, the more I’m paying attention to the skincare products I’m using and focusing less on the makeup products. If you don’t have great skin, all the expensive makeup in the world is not going to hide that fact, so I’d rather focus a little more on skincare first, make sure the canvas is the best it can be before we paint it up with the art that is makeup, you know what I’m sayin?

I had been seeing people all over the beauty community talk about the ELF Skincare line sold at Walmart or Target, wherever ELF products are sold, but I was reluctant to try it because I had a routine that was working well. I am not someone who gets a lot of breakouts, as long as I’m thoroughly cleansing and moisturizing my skin, generally the only time I get breakouts is when I’m pms’ing (ah the joys!). I generally stick to the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ when it comes to skincare, but after hearing so many good things the ELF line, I decided to give it a try. The products are all pretty affordable, I think they are around $12 for each product in the line.

I picked up the daily cleanser, serum, and moisturizer. Personally, I use them in the morning and have a totally different set of products that I use for my nighttime skincare routine.

Overall, I really have liked this line for a couple of reasons:

They are super gentle – I don’t feel like my face is being scrubbed raw, the scent is pleasant and not overwhelming.
They are not greasy or heavy – When you apply the serum and moisturizer, they are not sticky or tacky or heavy.
My skin feels really clean and hydrated after using these products.

I love finding products that work well with my skin, that are really affordable, and are easily accessible. As I’m getting older I find that the less scented and harsh the products are the better my skin does with it. I’d love to hear what skincare products you use and why you love them, leave me a comment with your favorite makeup remover, that’s something I’m still on the hunt for!

1 Palette 5 Looks – Morphe x KathleenLights Palette

Hello my beauties! Today I’m sharing five eye looks using just one shadow palette! Now, I realize this palette sold out super fast on the Morphe website, but I do know they are bringing it back one more time before Christmas. It’s a really super affordable palette, plus you can find a discount code on Kathleen’s YouTube channel that gets you an extra 10% off. The only thing I wasn’t super enthused about was the nearly $8 for shipping…OUCH. But I still only paid just under $23 bucks total for the palette and shipping, so that’s not awful.

Yes! Got my hands on the new @kathleenlights @morphebrushes palette! #makeup #beauty #makeuplover

Anyway, let’s get into it, shall we? I know it’s really easy to get into a rut using that same palette you just love over and over, you find a look you like and it becomes easiest to just use the same products and do the same look everyday to save time, but I thought about it and if I have all these colors in this palette, why not try and just create a few different eye looks all using just this one palette. It has everything you need from a matte white to a matte black to shimmers and transition shades, something for everyone!

I have heard mixed reviews on this palette, and I’ve gotta be honest, I really like this palette. I have found it to have great pigmentation in all of the individual pans, I find them easy to blend out, I don’t find them overly powdery or soft – with exception of that gorgeous green (the second from the left on the bottom row), that shade is a lot softer than the others, but in no way chunky or crumbly. I do really like this palette and have found myself reaching for it almost every day since I got it. I love that it’s affordable but I don’t love that it’s limited edition so if you want it you gotta make sure to keep an eye on social media – KathleenLights instagram and Morphe’s instagram will most likely have all the info about the new release date if you want to pick this palette up!

What is your go – to palette lately?

The Power of Makeup

Hello beauties!

What, can it really be? ANOTHER actual blog post?! Yes, yes it is!

I recently filmed a video for my YouTube channel that was inspired by the talented NikkieTutorials. She had filmed a video called The Power of MakeupThe Power of Makeup a while back and I had intended to do my version for a while and just never got around to it, until just recently.

roundtuit

So, here’s the deal, basically you just do you. Why do YOU wear makeup? How does makeup make you feel about yourself? If you are happy wearing a full face of makeup or not wearing a single stitch of makeup, that is what matters – YOUR happiness. Not how anyone else sees you. Not if people think you wear too much makeup or not enough makeup or your makeup is too bright or too dark. Makeup is an individual thing, some people feel their best with just a little bit of lip balm on and some of us feel our best wearing full on glam (yes, even during the day and we have nothing to do but the laundry or scrub toilets). I will never understand why people think they get to have an opinion on someone else’s personal preference for THEIR OWN FACE! Gah!

thepowerofmakeup

I decided to use both high end and drugstore items when I did my Power of Makeup look and as you can see, the difference in my face with no makeup on and then full on dark smokey eye and lashes…the important thing to note, I am comfortable with my face in either state. I have no issues leaving the house with no makeup on. On the other side of it, I also have no issues leaving the house in full on glam, even if I’m just running to the grocery store or to get gas. I’m comfortable with MYSELF, no matter what anyone’s opinion of me is…

There, now that I got that out in the open šŸ˜‰

Here is the video I filmed on The Power of Makeup, I really do hope you take a few minutes to watch it and really listen to the message, love you for you, all of you, flaws and all. Be happy just being you, makeup or no makeup. Also, don’t try to bring down anyone else for any reason, but for the purpose of this post, especially not because they choose to wear more (or less) makeup than you do. You do you!

Big love my friends, from me to you!

Makeup Tutorial

Y’all know I love me some makeup…like I have tons of it and I can’t help myself from getting more all the time. I recently picked up a couple of new items from the Hard Candy line that I’ve talked about trying before.

So, I thought I would show you my actual routine on applying ‘my face’ as I like to call it!

Photobucket

Step 1: Start out with a clean face. I use a baby wipe, witch hazel and then a moisturizer in the morning and at night and then in the shower I use a scrub.

Step 2: Sheer primer. I haven’t always used a primer but since I tried it I use it more often than not now because I can totally see what a difference it makes for how my makeup looks.

Step 3: Foundation. I used to just use a tinted moisturizer but as I’ve gotten older I have noticed that foundation gives me better coverage.

Step 4: Illiminating creme`. I love this stuff. It just gives me that youthful glow to my skin and I love it.

Step 5: Concealer. Now, this is one of the new items I just got to try from the Hard Candy line. This stuff is no joke. It covers tattoo’s and completely hides those deep dark circles I get under my eyes. It is thick so make sure you just get a little dab for under your eyes or else you will end up with huge white circles instead of the dark ones.

Photobucket

Step 6: Powder. I use a matte powder.

Step 7: Blush. I use a blush color wheel by NYC. I just like the way this blush matches my skin tone. It’s not too pink or orange.

Step 8: Brows. I usually use a brow powder to just fill in my brows.

Photobucket

Step 9: Shadows. I generally use 2-3 shadows and more often than not I stick with neutral colors and don’t get too crazy with my eye shadow.

Step 10: Liner. I just got this liquid liner from Hard Candy and I love it. My all time favorite liquid liner is Kat Von D’s tattoo liner but I can’t always afford the $18 price tag so I decided to try this one from HC and I love it.

Step 11: Curl ‘dem lashes. I ALWAYS curl my lashes. Just makes my eyes look more open and awake.

Step 12: Mascara. I tried this Hard Candy mascara a couple of months ago and I love it.

Last but not least a little lip butter to finish off my face šŸ˜‰ I hope y’all enjoyed seeing my little review and pics!

True Life: I’m a General Blogger

fabulous but evil and Mrs. Monologues have teamed up for a great link-up of different genre’s of blogs. It’s an 8 week link up to showcase different genre’s each week. The first week is True Life: I’m a General Blogger. This is for like general life blogs, so pretty much everyone. Head over and check it out and link up your blog!

For me, I fall into a few different categories. The first one is general life blogger. I started this blog a few years ago with the intention of having a place to vent about hubby and princess stuff, reviewing products I use, photography and all the other little things that happen daily in my life.

As a result I have ended up with posts like my little brother’s wedding or life changes or rambling posts. I have had posts of my projects around the house to gardening and favorite beauty products.

I love that I don’t have to just stick to one particular subject matter and can just write about what I want, when I want. That, my friends, is the beauty of blogging!

Are you a general blogger? Why not link up?!

Extreme Makeover: Me Edition

Ok, I am joining in another weekly thing, I think all of us can agree that as mom’s we put ourselves on the bottom of the pile and then at the end of the day there is usually nothing left for us. So, let’s change that! We can’t be the best version of ourselves if we are always coming in last is what I believe so let’s start making some changes to feel better and do better!

{ae filkins}

“Directions: Every week, you’ll do a specific post on your blog in regards to Extreme Makeover–Me Edition.

—-Pretty much, just update us on your progress. How did your week go? Did you struggle? How were you successful? Do you have any great tips? {I think it’s also important to celebrate even little successes}

—-Answer the specific question or topic that I pose each week.

After you’ve finished your post, view that specific post {either view your blog & click on the title of that post, or go ‘edit posts’ and ‘view’}. Grab the url and post it into Mr. Linky. Simple as that!!” Head over to Extreme Makeover: Me Edition and join in by linking up! Now on to the question for this week:

What’s your favorite beauty secret?
I know this has nothing to do with losing weight, per se, but on the other hand, it has everything to do with feeling good about yourself. So, in a sense, they go hand in hand.
__________________________________________________________

My beauty tips are pretty simple, I don’t have a lot of time for fuss!

1) Hydrate! I can always tell if I am not getting enough water because everything feels so dry, like I am talking middle of the Mohave Desert-been walking for days-looking for a drop of water – dry. My skin feels horrible if I don’t get enough water, not to mention I start to get really dehydrated and feel like crap from the inside out. So I try to drink at least 4 glasses of water a day…at the very least!

2) Soak Up Some Sun! I am not, in any way advocating you skip the sunscreen…although I admittedly don’t use it as often as I should – but what I am talking about is, get outside and sit in the sun for a bit. Get that good ol’ vitamin D! It helps me tremendously. If I don’t get the time in the sun every few days I start to notice that I get depressed.

3) Go Au’Natural every now and then! I can’t believe I am going to admit this to all of the blogging world…I do not shave everyday. I can’t. It irritates my skin something fierce. So, I have started using Veet for my underarms and legs once a week. It keeps my legs and underarms (my mother would be mortified if I said ‘pits’ instead of underarms – lol)smooth and prickle free for at least 3-4 days, then I Veet again at about 5 or 6 days.

Photobucket

4) Less Is More! I used to wear a face full of makeup every single day, but I just don’t have that kind of time, or frankly the energy to do all that mess. So, I usually just do a quick 5 minutes and ready to go. You want to know my quick routine? I moisturize with Philosophy’s Hope In A Jar with SPF 25
Photobucket

next is blush, I am not really particular about my blush, but I ALWAYS wear just a bit of blush on the apples of my cheeks, chin, nose and forehead. After that its concealer, which I learned within days of delivering my daughter would become my new best friend and oh boy has it! I just dab a tiny bit under my eyes to brighten them up, not too much or you will look like a racoon and let’s face it that is not an attractive look. After that I use mascara, I love Clinique mascara’s or my other favorite is Fresh – Supernova, I get it at Sephora and its a little pricey ($25 a tube) but I have sensitive eyes and it is one of the only mascara’s that doesn’t irritate my eyes.
Photobucket

After that I just slather on the gloss, I am totally a gloss girl, and I am done!

Those are my beauty tips for the day, what are yours?
